Who doesn’t know Claude Monet’s (1840-1926) famous water lilies? But how many of us have actually seen these explosions of colour on canvas, and immersed ourselves in the reflections, no longer knowing where water starts and sky ends? The last major Monet exhibitions in the Netherlands were at the Van Gogh Museum in 1986 and the Gemeentemuseum in 1952. A large proportion of his famous garden paintings, which had a major impact on artists like Rothko and Pollock, have in fact never been exhibited in the Netherlands. High time, therefore, for a grand tribute at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
